    Team Selection Process

Team selection is a thoughtful and well-rounded process. While tryouts are important, they are just one piece of the puzzle. Coaches have been observing players throughout the season during practices and games, and they also seek input from current coaches who know the players well. Final decisions on which players are selected for the team are made based on all of these factors—not just what happens during the tryout sessions. Our goal is to create the most competitive team possible, while also placing each player at the level that best supports their continued growth and development. We believe this approach gives every athlete the best chance to succeed and enjoy the game.

If selected, players will be asked to officially commit to the team by Saturday, April 26.
An exhibition game is scheduled for Sunday, April 27 at 10:30 AM at Scugog Arena (North Durham).

    About the Program

The U11A level is an important stage in a young athlete’s hockey journey. Our focus is on building strong foundational skills, while growing game sense, and developing a love for the game. The 2025-26 season promises to be full of learning and growth — with a balance of competition and enjoyment at the heart of everything we do.

    Player Development Plan

Our season plan is built around the Hockey Canada Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) model. We emphasize skating technique, puck handling, passing and shooting fundamentals, along with a focus on positional play and team strategies, helping to build confidence, resilience, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The development model includes a mix of practices, games, skill sessions, and tournaments to provide variety and ensure players are challenged in a supportive environment.

    Coaching Philosophy

Our coaching staff is dedicated to fostering a positive, fun, and competitive atmosphere where every player is encouraged to learn and contribute. We believe in:

    • Developing the whole athlete, including mental and physical well-being

    • Creating an encouraging environment that rewards hard work and dedication

    • Providing opportunities to grow in all game situations

    • Teaching accountabilityteamwork, and respect

Coaches will deliver feedback in ways that boost confidence and emphasize effort and improvement. We want our players to leave the rink smiling and excited to come back. Playing time will be distributed evenly during most games throughout the season. However, in key situations, players who consistently demonstrate strong effort and competitiveness will be rewarded with additional opportunities.

    Season Structure & Time Commitment

The 2025-26 season runs from early September through March.

    • 4 sessions per week (practices and/or games)

    • Approx. 50 games, including exhibition, regular season, playoffs and tournaments

    • 3-4 tournaments, including at least one travel tournament (TBD)

    • Estimated Cost, based on 2024-25 is approximately $3000 per player

While we fully encourage young athletes to explore and enjoy multiple sports throughout the year, our expectation is that hockey becomes a priority from September through March. During this time, consistent attendance is important—not only for individual development but for the success of the team as a whole. Players are expected to attend regularly, come prepared to learn, give their best effort, and support their teammates every step of the way. A strong commitment helps build both skills and team culture.

Brian Tatum – Head Coach, U11A Central York Panthers (2025–26)
